Crazy Love Book Review
Crazy Love by Francis Chan is a book that explains the love of God in a new light, and in a way that the American Church is often convicted. Some of the topics that were most profound are as follows:
We are incredibly small
How Jesus modeled real Love
Our job moving forward
In the first chapter of Crazy Love, Francis mentions a video that explains the size of the universe. This video is called "The Awe Factor" and you can find it HERE. This video lays the foundation for the main idea that this life is not about us. It is difficult to grasp this idea of the world not revolving around my skills, knowledge, or accomplishments, especially when that is where most of my effort goes. The more effort I put into these wordly acocmplishments the more I realize how empty they are. When go throughout a day of being focused on others and serving, I seem to be more filled up. The awe factor can serve as a constant reminder to acknowledge how big God is and how our purpose is to love him and love others.
Francis builds the idea of God's true love for us around Matthew 7:11. Matthew says "Even though you are evil, since you know how to give good gifts for your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask." I do not know what it is like to have children, or to love a child as your own, but I am the son of a father who has loved me greatly. I am so thankful for my Dad and grateful for the way he loves me, but it does not compare to how God loves me as his child. Francis said "Nothing compares to being truly, exuberantly wanted by your children." We could never win God over, but the only thing we can do is spend time with him and obey, this is what he desires from us as his children that he loves so deeply.
Lastly, our job moving forward is simple, Love God Love People. Spending time in the word, and with our Father in prayer, produces fruit in our lives that effect the people around us. God is able to love through people who are willing to bear fruit. Whether it is in school, your career, family, etc. loving the people around you fulfills what God designed for our lives. The most profound quote in the book came in the last chapter for me. Francis asks "How will you answer God when he asks, what did you do with what I gave you".... WOW how do you even begin to build a case as to why we deserve to enter into his kingdom? Simple answer, Jesus. Becoming more like Jesus is the only way to answer that question fully, you cannot do it on your own! Love God Love People
